Every day brings new headlines about settler violence against West Bank Palestinians, violence that is often ignored or actively abetted by Israeli military forces. Our guest will provide a report on his recent two-month stay in the West Bank and his observations about the realities of daily life for the Palestinians facing such enormous pressures. The trip was organized by the International Solidarity Movement, a Palestinian-led movement committed to resisting the long-entrenched and systematic oppression and dispossession of the Palestinian population, using non-violent, direct-action methods and principles.
From Rush Rehm: “I recently returned from 2 months providing solidarity presence for beleaguered Palestinian families in the area around Masafer Yatta, south of Hebron, in the occupied West Bank. As part of a small cohort of International Solidarity Movement volunteers, I experienced first hand what life is like for Palestinians facing daily harassment, and worse, from Israeli settlers, police, and the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). After a brief overview of the larger historical and geopolitical forces at work, my presentation (with photos) will focus on what daily life is like in the West Bank, the forms that non-violence resistance takes, and how anyone interested might get involved.”
An actor, director, and professor emeritus of Theater & Performance Studies and Classics, Rush Rehm publishes in the areas of Greek tragedy and contemporary politics. As well as seminars on ancient theater and culture, Rehm taught courses on contemporary politics, the media, and U.S. imperialism.
Other Voices: A Monthly Conversation for Activists is presented by Peninsula Peace and Justice Center. PPJC Director Paul George is the host of the program.
