In a disastrous decision, the conservative majority of the Supreme Court accomplished a longtime goal of the right-wing: the final destruction of 1965’s historic Voting Rights Act. Already, numerous southern states are scrambling to redraw voting maps to deny representation to Black Americans.

In this conversation with local activist and retired Superior Court Judge LaDoris Cordell, we’ll explore the decision itself, the history of the right-wing’s years-long campaign to kill the VRA, the ramifications of the decision, and, perhaps most importantly, what we can do in the wake of the decision to salvage democracy in this country. Join us for this essential conversation!

Since graduating from Stanford Law School in 1974, Judge LaDoris Hazzard Cordell (ret.) has devoted her career in the law to creating greater access and equal justice for people of color and low-income individuals. An author, artist, vocalist, and pianist, she resides in California with her partner and is the proud mother of two daughters.

In 1982, Governor Jerry Brown appointed Ms. Cordell to the Municipal Court of Santa Clara County, making her the first African American woman judge in northern California. In 1988, Judge Cordell won election to the Superior Court of Santa Clara County.
