In recognition of Banned Books Week and the ever-growing calls for unbridled censorship spreading across the country, we (all of us) will speak with booksellers Craig and Derrick, whose San Mateo shop has a large selection of books for children and young adults. Since everything at Reach and Teach is focused on gender equality, sustainable living, peacemaking, and the like, it isn’t surprising to hear Craig note that, “Just about every book we sell has been banned somewhere.”
Banned Books Week is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read. Banned Books Week was launched in 1982 in response to a sudden surge in the number of challenges to books in schools, bookstores and libraries. Typically held during the last week of September, it highlights the value of free and open access to information. Banned Books Week brings together the entire book community — librarians, booksellers, publishers, journalists, teachers, and readers of all types — in shared support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas, even those some consider unorthodox or unpopular.
PPJC’s Brown Bag Lunch Series represent an opportunity to get together with other activists in a much lees formal environment than our webinars. You are most welcome to take part in the conversation! So pack a lunch, pull up a chair, and share your thoughts. (And please remember to register ahead of time.)
Reach & Teach is San Mateo’s independent bookstore and shop for unique products that transform the world. Everything at Reach and Teach is focused on Gender Equality, Sustainable Living, and Peacemaking. They offer books, toys, puzzles, games, green lifestyle products, teacher resources, and fair trade gifts for all ages. Reach And Teach was recently selected by State Senator Josh Becker as Small Business of the Year for District 13!
