JOEL BEININ Professor of Middle East History, Stanford University Report and Update from the Middle East
Joel Beinin, one of the country's leading experts on the Middle East and a frequent guest on Other Voices, has spent the past two years in Egypt where he served as Director of the Middle East Studies Program at the American University in Cairo.
As we welcome Joel back to the area, we’ll talk to him about his experiences living and teaching in Egypt, including the current wave of strikes taking place there -- the biggest social movement in Egypt in over half a century. We will also get an update on his particular area of expertise: the Israel-Palestine conflict. We’ll explore the current status of the “peace process,” Israel’s increasing tensions with Iran and Syria, and the internal political turmoil in Israel.
Joel Beinin has served as President of the Middle East Studies Association of North America and as a contributing editor to Middle East Report (a highly recommended resource). Among the many books he has written or co-authored are Intifada: The Palestinian Uprising (1989), Origins of the Gulf War (1991), Workers and Peasants in the Modern Middle East (2001), and The Struggle for Sovereignty: Palestine And Israel (2006).
As always, you are an important part of the conversation. Come with your questions and comments and be a part of the studio audience. Watching from home or on the internet? Phone in with your questions: (650) 856-1491.
